DIY Fall Decor

Welcome October! I finally got some fall decorations up – I get the bug by the first day of fall, but now’s when I found the time. It’s been a strangely busy past few weeks, due to travel and visitors. So, it’s been a such a happy to get them up and buy some pumpkins!

20131001-135724.jpgI wanted to make a fall wreath for the front door…

20131001-135732.jpgI was inspired by a pin from yourcozyhome.blogspot.it and went to the craft store in search of supplies.

I came away with some small autumn floral picks and a square basket, then I gathered a tiny bird and a twine ball that I smushed down into a nest, as well as a floral, fall colored candle ring. Here’s how it turned out!

“I would rather sit on a pumpkin and have it all to myself, than be crowded on a velvet cushion.” – Henry David Thoreau

I wanted a big switch-up for the fall mantel after seeing so many cute things online and in magazines, using shudders or fence panel-looking things to hang wreaths from, but I did not have either of those things on-hand. So, I re-created an old frame I used to use for it, instead of the window pane I’ve been using. First, I painted the large frame with a duck egg chalk paint, then I staple-gunned a burlap coffee sack to the back, leaving slits in the center of the top for hanging a wreath. I had bought the sack from  a local coffee shop for $5, and it was the perfect size! Then, I used twine to hang a small wreath from the top. Now I had a fun backdrop for all my pumpkins! I have a small pumpkin collection, plus I added some real ones, using a basket on its side and a variety of cake plates for height dimension. I love all the orange below the cool, neutral burlap and “duck egg.”

“There is something in October sets the gypsy blood astir: We must rise and follow her, When from every hill of flame She calls, and calls each vagabond by name.” ~William Bliss
