Thankful

In the celebration of Thanksgiving, we’ve been trying to make extra effort to talk with Pen Elaine about what she is thankful for, and in turn, to practice thankfulness ourselves. As adults, we tend to think of Jesus Christ, our family, and practical things that are, actually, completely temporary- food, house, working car, our health, job, etc. Pen Elaine, on the other hand, always answers the question of what she is thankful for with friends or specific names of friends or relatives. Even when she recently started her own mealtime prayers, she just wants to thank God for her friends, and now she’s been trained to thank Him for our food, but people, eternal beings, are what she is thankful for, and when I was considering this early in the wee hours of pregnancy insomnia, it occurred to me that God has set eternity in her heart. Ecclesiastes 3:11 says how “God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart…” This is something that has always been a favorite truth to come up in conversations with my dad over the years, and people like to say how young children are so fresh from God. I am encouraged to savor and give thanks for the eternal blessings in my life this year.

Now, if you’re looking for a thanksgiving song…we were into singing on our holiday road trip and recommend
The give thanks song by don moen:

Give thanks with a grateful heart
Give thanks to the Holy one
Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son
